Lauderhill Asks: Can It Be Moved Instead?

Tree Removal in Lauderhill comes with a step many cities skip. Before a permit is issued, the city evaluates whether the tree can be relocated. A tree that is successfully relocated doesn't have to be replaced; if relocation isn't viable, the removed tree must be replaced. Lauderhill's Planning & Zoning Department, at 5581 W. Oakland Park Boulevard, reviews paper submissions in about five to seven business days.

Canopy for canopy

Lauderhill's replacement rules are more detailed than most. The canopy of the replacement trees at maturity has to at least equal the canopy removed, and native canopy has to be replaced with native trees from the city's list. Replacement trees have minimum sizes; a Category 1 tree, for example, has to be at least 12 feet tall with a 2.5-inch caliper, and cabbage palms need 8 feet of clear trunk. Removals under certain code provisions require an extra 50% replacement. Replacement or relocation has to be finished within six months of the permit.

Larger replacement plantings must also be diverse. Six to ten replacement trees need at least two species, 11 to 20 need three, and the count keeps climbing from there. For a homeowner removing one or two trees this rarely matters, but for a condo association replacing a row of failing trees it does.

Condos and associations

Lauderhill has a lot of multifamily housing, and the application addresses it directly: condominium properties need a letter of authorization signed by the landowner. Undeveloped or redevelopment sites need a certified tree survey and site plan. If you manage an association, we can give you a written scope for every tree so the board, the city and the residents are looking at the same plan.

History in the trees

Herbert Sadkin of All-State Properties developed Lauderhill, which incorporated on June 20, 1959; he also developed Bonaventure, and the Inverrary Country Club opened in 1970. Many early homes were built from off-the-shelf designs sold through Macy's. That makes the oldest yard trees 50 to 60 years old, and many of them were planted close to the house when the lots were new.

Lauderhill work we see most

  • Removing trees damaging condo walkways, parking lots and building foundations
  • Taking down old black olives and ficus on 1960s-era single-family lots
  • Removing storm-damaged trees around Inverrary's golf course edges
  • Preparing sites for replacement planting with stump grinding
  • Providing tree-by-tree scopes for association boards

Getting replacement sizes right

Lauderhill sets minimum sizes for replacement trees, and buying something too small can mean doing it twice. Category 1 replacements need at least a 12-foot height and 2.5-inch caliper. Category 2 and 3 trees need at least 10 feet of height and a 2-inch caliper, and cabbage palms need 8 feet of clear trunk. The city measures caliper about 6 inches above the ground. When you shop for a replacement, bring those numbers to the nursery, and keep the receipt and tag for the inspection.

The city covers just 8.57 square miles at about 7 feet above sea level and is home to Central Broward Regional Park, a county-owned park whose cricket stadium opened in 2007. Call (954) 314-3415 or send the form for a free estimate. Get a free estimate

Lauderhill Tree Rules

  • Relocation first. Lauderhill evaluates whether a tree can be relocated before issuing a removal permit; a successfully relocated tree does not need to be replaced.
  • Canopy replacement. Replacement canopy at maturity must at least equal the canopy removed, native canopy must be replaced with listed natives, and work must be completed within six months of the permit.
  • Species diversity. Replacement plantings need multiple species as quantities grow: two species for 6-10 trees, three for 11-20, four for 21-50 and five for 51 or more.
  • Condo authorization. Tree permit applications for condominium properties require a letter of authorization signed by the landowner.

Lauderhill Questions

Why does Lauderhill want to relocate my tree?

City code has staff consider relocation before approving a removal. Large, mature trees often aren't good candidates, and when relocation isn't viable the tree can be removed and replaced instead.

How long do I have to plant replacement trees?

Lauderhill gives six months from permit issuance to complete replacement or relocation.

Our condo has a dozen trees to remove. What does the city need?

A landowner-signed letter of authorization, the application, and a plan showing replacements. With 11 to 20 replacement trees, the plan needs at least three species.

What size cabbage palm counts as a replacement in Lauderhill?

The city's minimum for a cabbage palm replacement is 8 feet of clear trunk.
