Tree Removal in Cooper City, FL

A Small City Surrounded by Bigger Ones

Tree Removal in Cooper City covers a compact suburb of about 8 square miles, wedged between Davie to the north, Pembroke Pines to the south, Hollywood and Davie to the east, and Southwest Ranches to the west. Morris Cooper founded it in 1959, it took his name, and it still uses the motto "Someplace Special." Most of what we do here is residential: one or two trees in a backyard that have gotten too big for a pool, a roofline or a fence.

How the city has grown

Cooper City reached 34,401 residents in 2020, up from 28,547 in 2010. In 2006 it annexed part of the former Waldrep Dairy Farm, the same dairy whose land became much of eastern Pembroke Pines. Farmland and pasture leave a particular kind of soil profile: sandy fill over old muck in places, with a high water table. Trees planted in that ground often root shallowly, and shallow roots are what let a tree go over in a summer storm after days of rain.

The backyard tree problem

Cooper City yards were planted by families who wanted shade fast. The trees that deliver fast shade in South Florida, such as ficus, black olive and some fast-growing exotics, are also the ones that crowd foundations and drop heavy limbs as they age. By the time the kids are grown, the tree is two stories tall and leaning over the pool cage. Taking it out usually means working in sections, with no room to drop anything bigger than a branch.

Parks and open space

The city's parks include Brian Piccolo Park, with a cricket ground, a cycling track and a skate park, as well as Bill Lips Park, Flamingo West Park and the Cooper City Sports Complex. Like much of western Broward, the city's climate is tropical rainforest bordering on tropical monsoon, and the land sits about 7 feet above sea level.

What we do most in Cooper City

  • Removing trees over pool enclosures and patios, lowered in sections
  • Taking out shade trees whose roots are lifting pavers and slabs
  • Palm removals near the house and fences
  • Clean-up after storms, including split trunks and hangers
  • Grinding stumps so you can replant or put in sod

Permits and the hazard-tree exemption

Check with the city before removing a tree, because like its neighbors Cooper City regulates tree removal. For a single-family home, Florida Statute 163.045 removes the permit, fee and replanting requirement when you hold a signed risk assessment from an ISA-certified arborist or Florida-licensed landscape architect showing the tree poses an unacceptable risk. For other trees, follow the city's process.

Trees near power lines

If a tree is touching or growing toward an FPL line, don't try to cut it yourself. FPL says to keep yourself and anything you're holding at least 10 feet from main and neighborhood power lines, and at least 30 feet from higher-voltage transmission lines. Only specially trained line-clearing professionals should work near them. FPL trims its main lines about every three years and neighborhood lines about every six years, so a backyard tree can grow well into a line between visits. Contact FPL at 1-800-226-3545 or FPL.com/trees about trees on the utility's lines; for the rest of the tree, we work around them.

Cooper City Questions

Can you remove a tree hanging over my pool cage in Cooper City?

Yes. That's one of the most common jobs we do here. Limbs are roped and lowered in pieces so nothing lands on the screen or the pool deck.

Does Cooper City require a permit?

Check with the city before any removal. If the tree is a documented hazard on a single-family lot, Florida Statute 163.045 can exempt it from the local permit and fee.

Why did my tree fall over when it wasn't that windy?

Shallow roots in wet, sandy ground. After several days of rain, a tree with a heavy crown can tip in a modest gust. Trees that start leaning after rain should be looked at quickly.

Will FPL trim the tree touching my power line?

FPL handles trimming on its own lines, on a cycle of about three years for main lines and six years for neighborhood lines. Call FPL at 1-800-226-3545 about the line; never cut near it yourself.
