Tree Removal in Davie, FL

Big Lots Change the Job

Tree Removal in Davie often looks different from the same job a few miles east. Horseback riding is still common in town, many older buildings are ranches and Western-style properties, and a good share of parcels are large enough to hold dozens of trees, fence lines and pasture. That gives us room to fell trees in one piece where a small city lot would require roping every limb down, but it also means longer drags to the chipper, soft ground after rain and livestock that has to be kept clear of the work.

The town's permit rule

The Town of Davie's code compliance FAQ says a tree removal or relocation permit is generally required, and describes the application as inexpensive; a town landscape inspector can help a homeowner fill it out. Invasive and exotic trees listed in Town Code section 12-152 do not need a permit. If a property is already short of the trees its landscape code requires, removing more may still trigger review, so we recommend checking with the town before clearing a large group of trees.

The same FAQ points to Section 12-33(s): landscaped areas have to be kept healthy and trimmed, and dead or badly damaged plantings, trees included, must be replaced with healthy material. A dead tree left standing on a Davie lot is not just a hazard; it can become a code issue.

Ridge, swamp and old farmland

Around 1900 the state reclaimed about 156 square miles of swampland in the area, and Robert Parsell Davie bought 44 square miles of it for farms, founding the settlement of Zona that later took his name. Pine Island Ridge, where Tequesta campsites as old as 5,000 to 7,000 years have been found, is one of the few natural high points in the county. Most of the town sits about 7 feet above sea level on drained muck and sand, which is why trees here can go over in saturated ground even without extreme wind.

Storm damage across the town

After Hurricane Wilma in October 2005, an aerial survey found that roughly 70% of homes and businesses in Davie, along with Coconut Creek, Margate, North Lauderdale, Plantation and Sunrise, showed some degree of damage. On ranch properties the cleanup can be enormous: multiple downed trees across fences, hangers in tall pines and root plates torn out of soft ground.

Work we commonly do in Davie

  • Removing exotic invasives like Brazilian pepper and melaleuca along fence lines and pasture edges
  • Dead or storm-damaged pine and oak removal on acreage
  • Taking out trees crowding barns, paddocks and riding rings
  • Lot clearing for a new driveway, pool or outbuilding (check the permit first)
  • Stump grinding across pasture so mowers and hooves aren't caught

Davie is also home to Nova Southeastern University and campuses of Florida Atlantic University, the University of Florida and Broward College, so the neighborhoods around them mix rentals and owner homes. Davie Questions

Do I need a permit to clear Brazilian pepper from my Davie property?

Usually not. Davie exempts the invasive and exotic species listed in Town Code section 12-152 from its removal permit. If the clearing would drop the lot below its required tree count, check with the town first.

Can you work around horses and fencing?

Yes, as long as animals are moved out of the work area. We plan felling directions around fences and gates and leave paddocks clear of chips and brush when we finish.

A dead tree on my lot got a code notice. What now?

Davie's code expects dead or badly damaged trees to be replaced. We can remove the dead tree and grind the stump so a replacement can be planted, and the written invoice helps document the work.
